A little about me...

Dr James Fleming

I’m Dr James Fleming, a SENR Registered Performance Nutritionist, academic, and practitioner with over 10 years’ experience helping athletes fuel, recover, and perform at their best. My work sits at the intersection of science and applied sport, translating complex research into practical, individualised strategies.

I am an Associate Professor at St Mary’s University and currently serve as Associate Head of School (Nutrition), where I work predominantly on the MSc in Applied Sports Nutrition programme while overseeing undergraduate and postgraduate nutrition-related programmes. My research and doctoral work focus on youth and adolescent athlete development, exploring fuelling, growth, maturation, energy availability, and RED-S, alongside a specific research focus on the demands of tennis.

Alongside my academic role, I consult across the full athlete pathway, from grassroots development to elite performers across a range of sports, including rugby, tennis, football, athletics, and gymnastics. My applied experience spans professional rugby (England RFU Women’s U20s and Harlequins Women RFC) and football (Watford FC), alongside supporting Olympians and Paralympians across multiple disciplines.

As an ISAK Level 3 Instructor Anthropometrist, I deliver certified body composition training internationally. I also lead the Adolescent Athlete Research Community (AARC) and host the Fuelling Conversations podcast.

Whether working with athletes, parents, practitioners, or students, my goal remains consistent: To make sports nutrition evidence clear, practical, and actionable.

Outside of work, I’m a proud dad and husband, a keen tennis player, a big Andy Murray fan, and currently training for the London Marathon 2027.
